OS/2 GURU Jam Session RESULTS [2/3]

Wed, 20140813 - 18:23 -0600

The meeting was succesful because the participants offered additional
topics for discussion.

Check the results:
* Logs and topics: os2.guru/en/index.php
* Read the interview with Alex Taylor about eComStation internals --
ecomstation.ru/showarticle.php
(extended version)
* + interview with the designer Wizard (different eComStation artwork,
artwork for applications, promo materials)
(russian text) -- ru.ecomstation.ru/showarticle.php

Open topics for discussion:
* How to link OS/2 with mobile devices? What are your needs?
* How to use OS/2 for business purposes? Generate document, print and
manage finances?

Mistakes of OS/2 GURU 2014/07:
* There were no promotion of OS/2 GURU on other OS/2 sites (no
banners, no discussions. os2world published the announcement on the
TOP)
* The program should be separated to: Common topics, for developers,
for businessmen
* To animate the meeting, it's necessary show video materials (online
translation or recorder interviews or reports)

Still more on OS/2 development

Tue, 20140805 - 05:28 -0600

Post bu Lewis Rosenthal on os2world.com:

Greetings, everyone.

In case anyone missed my previous statements regarding the formation of a new OS/2-focused company, please see:

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/eCS-Technical/conversations/messages/19068
http://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,397.0.html

and some discussion auf Deutsch:

http://www.os2.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=265

I want to share with you that at the end of July, Arca Noae, LLC was chartered in the State of Delaware in the US. Arca Noae is poised to become the driving force behind further development and maintenance of the OS/2 platform for some time to come.

Our website is still under construction, but we hope to be able to unveil it in short order. Besides new applications and updates, new device driver developments (upgrades, enhancements, and likely some completely new) are occurring, all of which we plan to announce on our site.

In Warpstock Europe news, summer vacations have brought some delays, but we are working to narrow the list of possible locations, and should have an announcement with more details in the near future.

Again, I want to thank all of you for being patient. We want to launch Arca Noae properly, and are paying close attention to detail. Rest assured there is a small but dedicated team working on and for the Company on a daily basis, and developers continue to do what they do best: write code. It's coming. Really.

More on new OS/2 developments

Tue, 20140805 - 05:25 -0600

A message by Lewis Rosenthat on OS2world.com:

I posted a message a week or so ago concerning my plans to start a new organization focused entirely on OS/2 products and services. For those of you who may have missed that, the gist was that little in the way of new OS/2 products or releases have been made available in the past year or so, and that there seems to be a need in the community for new applications and updates. I was able to locate several contributors of time and resources and get them to come together to form a new company which will be focused on this market, maintaining strong ties to the user community, and dedicated to maintaining the viability of OS/2 on modern hardware.

I also said that I would have further announcements. Today, I'd like to share with you some more details of some of the team working to bring new and updated technology to the platform.

We are working closely with bww bitwise works GmbH in Austria. Bitwise ports software to eCS such as  Java and QT, and is directly involved in the current work to update Firefox for eCS. Also, other developers such as Steven Levine and David Azarewicz have committed to providing time and code for the new company.

We are also working to help make Warpstock Europe 2014 happen this year, and while date and location have not yet been set, we are committed to making details public in the near future.

Many people have come forward offering support and asking what they may do to help. Rest assured, as we move forward, we will stay in touch and will advise when we need assistance. We greatly appreciate the response we've received so far, with so many willing to donate to this project. Stay tuned!

All the best.

SM 2.14, TB17.0.11pre and FF 17.0.11

Sun, 20140706 - 17:09 -0600

I've uploaded the above to Hobbes. Fixes backported from the Bitwise 24.3 branch, fpu crash fixed, glyph boxes instead of TAB and LF fixed and a few other minor fixes. A slightly different way of fixing the 100% CPU plugin problem, may need fine tuning for some plugins as it is only prefs. Firefox rebuilt with official branding.
Usual requirements, libc065, mzfntcfgft, pthr01.dll (pthread), mmap.dll, stdcpp6.dll (libstdc++), gcc446.dll and gcc473.dll depending on the version of pthr01.dll installed. RPM package names in brackets.
I've been using TB and SM for weeks without a problem besides they are slow, Firefox is basically identical to my previous upload excepting branding and a preference.
Thanks to Bitwise who are responsible for the vast majority of the recent work done.
Dave

Major Major mailing list

Sun, 20140629 - 20:56 -0600

Version 1.68 of Major Major is now available from
www.pmoylan.org/pages/os2/Major.html
or from
ftp://ftp.pmoylan.org/Major/major1.68.zip
or from Hobbes incoming.

Major Major is a mailing list manager, that lets you create and manage
multiple e-mail discussion lists.

(It is not spamming software, because it allows list members to
unsubscribe. In any case, we retain the right to take retaliatory
measures against anyone who uses it to send unwanted mail.)

The latest version has two significant changes.

1. The ability to break up outgoing mail into small batches, each for a
subset of list members, to deal with deal with mail servers that do not
respect the RFC rules about number of mail recipients. Making the batch
limit small is inefficient, and creates a higher load on mail servers,
but might be needed to deal with hostile servers.

2. An option for DMARC compatibility. DMARC is a "standard" implemented
by spammer-friendly mail providers such as AOL and Yahoo, which has the
side-effect of making life difficult for mailing lists. You might need
this option for lists whose members are unable to receive list mail.
