eComStation - OS/2
New eComStation 2.2 beta **LIVE** CD released...
Hello everybody,
Mensys B.V. has released a new eCS 2.2 beta live CD yesterday. This
replaces the first eCS 2.2 beta live CD released in February of this
year. We would like everybody to test this new demo CD and report succes
and/or problems via supportteam@ecomstation.com
Bug fixes in this demo CD:
* New USB stack that should fix people who have problems with mouse and
USB keyboard not working. Please let us know if this new now works for
you, especialy if previous versions of the eCS 2.2 live and install CD
did not work for you!
* The danis506.add and os2ahci.add driver have been updated to fix
problems and regressions in the danis506.add driver.
* Problems with loading the NIC driver under Virtual PC should be fixed
now also (it would hang).
* People who reported hangs at startup on the network card setup
program, this hang is also fixed.
On some systems the supported NIC driver is not yet properly detected
and loaded yet. We are still working on this.
This new demo CD contains the latest USB stack version 10.192. Which
should fix most problems with USB mouse and keyboard not working.
You can download a copy of the new demo CD via
www.ecomstaion.com/democd

New USB host controller drivers: usbhcd191.zip
I have updated the USB host controller drivers
USBUHCD.SYS, USBOHCD.SYS, USBEHCD.SYS, USBD.SYS (and now also: USBRESMG.SYS)
I have now placed these on hobbes.
hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/incoming/usbhcd191.zip
They will eventually make it into directory:
/pub/os2/system/drivers/misc
1) USBEHCD: setting speed (/S: switch) back to the default of 8 (if /S:
not specified). Unfortunately, a "chkdsk x: /F:3" against a HPFS
formatted stick will otherwise lead to problems.
Everyone who had problems with USBEHCD.SYS should now either run with
/S:8 or not specify /S: switch at all. You can experiment with lower
values (/S:4, /S:2, /S:1) to see if that will still work on your system.
USBMSD.ADD would need updates in order to be able to queue transmission
requests and therefore increase the throughput.
Currently it will only issue a transmission once the preceding
transmission has finished.
Other fixes were made to allow to attach USB mice and keyboard to
external USB hubs.
3) USBD: reset external USB hubs before powering on ports. This should
fix some problems where devices plugged into external hubs won't
properly attach.
4) USBRESMG, USBUHCD, USBOHCD: nothing, just increased version number
Release of eComStation 2.2 German and English
The release of eComStation 2.2 German and English GA (general availability) was planned for the second week of April. During the public beta cycle however bugs have been reported that have caused a delay in the release of eCS 2.2. Most of the bugs that have been reported with problems of the eCS installer have been resolved.
We expect another 2 to 3 weeks are needed to resolve and confirm the following issue's are fixed.
1. OS2AHCI.ADD hangs on some systems or has problem(s) detecting the
proper disk size on *some* systems.
This is currently being worked on.
2. DANIS506.ADD did not work on some systems but most issue's seem to
be resolved. We are currently waiting for feedback from people who
received access to
an internal test ISO to confirm that all reported issue's with the
DANIS506.ADD have been resolved.
3. On 10 to 15 percent of the systems USB support is not working at
all. We are currently working on tracing and fixing this.
To a large extend the above bugs have surprised us to some degree as
the OS2AHCI.ADD driver has been part of eCS 2.1. Also the updated
DANIS506.ADD driver and the OS2AHCI.ADD where tested
on more then 50 different systems Mensys had access to. The
DANIS506.ADD and OS2AHCI.ADD have been part of the new bootable eCS 2.2
demo CD released in March. This demo CD was released before he eCS 2.2
DVD was released for public testing. Also before the release of the eCS
2.2 public large disc support (up to 2TB) was also re-tested and
confirmed to work.
A new public beta might follow. However this might also not happen if
all the people who have reported bugs confirm the bugs are resolved.
Best regards,
Roderick Klein

bitwiseworks starts new project to port Mozilla (Firefox/Thunderbird) to eCS (OS/2)
bitwiseworks has started its latest porting project, bringing an updated
Firefox and Thunderbird to the eCS (OS/2) platform.
The project will be entirely open source. Source code and progress can
be found at
https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2
As with previous big projects (like Qt GUI framework, Java 6, Flash)
funding is required to ensure a steady progress at a reasonal speed.
Partial funding was already provided by several companies and
individuals, with Mensys BV being the main sponsor. But in order to have
the project updated in a reasonable timeframe, we need more sponsoring.
If you are interested in sponsoring this project, please contact Silvan
Scherrer (silvan dot scherrer at bitwiseworks dot com) directly or
alternatively buy sponsoring units.
Sponsoring units may be bought at Mensys. *100%* of that money will be
transferred to the developers.
The Mensys sponsor link is: www.mensys.com/shop/NetlabsJava6
Right now we do not have a separate link for Mozilla development -
however the persons behind Java and Mozilla projects are the same,
Dmitriy Kuminov doing development and Silvan Scherrer doing project
management.

bootAble 6.9.1
Hello bootAble users,
Just to let you know I've recently released a minor update to bootAble. As always you can download it from our website <hrbaan.home.xs4all.nl/bootAble/>.
v6.9.1 (04/03/2013)
* Not trying to determine cd/dvd recorder device when creating ISO
image only (|CDRECORDCREATEISOONLY|), this should prevent
unnecessary errors from e.g., the scanbus command.
* Minor adaptations for VirtualBox (thanks to Lothar Soens);
* Added a notes about VirtualBox in the Known Problems/Limitations
<hrbaan.home.xs4all.nl/bootAble/bootAble.html>
section.
Have fun,
Hayo
P.S. If you don't want to receive news about updates to bootAble (e.g., you stopped using it), just let me know and I'll remove your email address from the list.

Zippy archiver: deep integration to WPS
We have updated our best-seller, Whatsnew: better integration to WPS.
Screenshot:
ecomstation.ru/projects/zippy/screenshots/Zippy-20121008.png
The next step - implement REXX API, so you can manipulate archive files from REXX scripts.
What's new:
* Additional menu item that allow to easy unpack all archive to the specified directory now added to "Open as" submenu of archive objects.
* Zippy can be integrated to folder context menu.
* The check mark of the archive element can be toggled via pressing of a SPACE keyboard button.
* Corrected suggested extraction path for multi-volumed archives.
Homepage of Zippy: ecomstation.ru/zippy
Zippy uses several libraries from eCo Software toolkit (http://ecomstation.ru/toolkit),
that's why it was developed so fast, it has advanced user interface and very powerful inside.
Status of eCS 2.2 beta
That the danis506.add IDE driver is not working on some old systems. It
has received maintenance to fix some bugs that have been reported and
that broke some stuff it seems. If you have not done so yet, please
report a bug in the bug tracker. Also check the eComStation bugtracker
if the defect you have is already open. Thats saves us some time!
In broad lines the following issue's have been found and are being
worked on.
* On some older systems the DANIS506.ADD driver does not see the CD ROM
and/or HDD. Regression in the code needs to befixed.
* Some systems the OS2AHCI driver does not show the hard disc or you
get an LVM error. Both items are under research and if the people that
reported the problem can follow the instructions we will be posting in
the bugs over the next couple of days we should be able to fix these
issue.
* On some systems the USB driver don't work. eCS 2.2 ship with new USB
host controller drivers and new mouse and keyboard drivers. Again over
the next couple of days we will we will post information that we hope will follow to we can debug these
issue's. Again remote stuff remotely is not easy but we will make it as
easy as possible.
One benefit compared to the IBM USB driver is that the new USB drivers
contain tracing facilities
Its of no use to release a new beta RIGHT now. But the problem with
Genmac not installing correctly with the beta has been resolved and the
fix in CVS. Also the some problems in the NAPS GUI (MPTS replacement)
and the CUPS wizard are partly/are being worked on. So your bug reports
are useful! But some bugs take more time to fix then others.
The problem with OS2AHCI and LVM not working is already being looked in. So please stay tuned to your mailbox for feedback from our techteam. And as always when possible provide \var\log\instlog.zip. That is a treasure room for us with information.

DVD ISO eCS 2.2 beta English
Yesterday we send out a message that we found out 2 older USB drivers
in the beta version of eCS 2.2 where being installed to hard disc. That
issue was fixed.
However this morning we found out the new ISO file had not been put
online yet (it was on the server but the wrong directory).
You can check if your ISO is effected. The old ISO is from yesterday
created at around 02:00 PM. The correct was has the following file in
the eCS directory with this timestamp:
\ECS\ecs_inst.flg
eComStation 2.2_beta EN_US Mon Mar 25 10:21:02 pm 2013

Mensys B.V.
UPDATE: eCS 2.2 DVD released at 16:00 hours Amsterdam time has 1 bug
A few dozen people downloaded the eCS 2.2 beta English DVD ISO from the
Mensys server. We had to withdraw the ISO at 22:30 Amsterdam time.
Booting from DVD the ISO works without any error. However on boot from
hard disc the wrong 2 USB drivers are installed.
The files USBOHCD.SYS and USBEHCD.SYS where not updated 1 pack file.
This could result in problems with USB devices and slow boots.
At 23:15 we released a new ISO with the proper version of the drivers
in place.
If your ISO is effected by this please check the file:
\ECS\ecs_inst.flg on the DVD it mentions:
eComStation 2.2_beta EN_US Mon Mar 25 02:19:05 pm 2013
In the new released eCS 2.2 beta the file has this information it:
eComStation 2.2_beta EN_US Mon Mar 25 10:21:02 pm 2013
If you have the effected ISO you can also boot from the DVD and open a
command prompt and from the ramdrive (normaly drive Z:) copy usb*.sys
to bootdrive:\os2\boot. That way your boot on hard disc will be up to
date with the proper drivers.
Boot from the DVD is not affected!
Sorry for the inconvience
Best regards,
Roderick Klein

== eComStation 2.2 beta ==
This is a beta version of eComStation 2.2, provided to interested
customers for the purpose of testing and evaluation.
eComStation 2.2 includes many new features. While our in-house
testing indicates that they are fully functional and reliable, we
would appreciate as many reports from our beta testers as possible
in order to complete our evaluation prior to final product release.
Consequently, we would request that, when using the eComStation 2.2
Beta, you pay particular attention to testing and evaluating the
following new or improved features:
* New: CUPS printer support. Support for a large variety of printers
is installed by default.
* New: File Open Container.
* New: split view for desktop folders.
* New: Adapters and Protocols configuration program.
* New: PNG Desktop. (large icons)
* ACPI power management, especially in combination with multiple
processors. The ACPI support in eComStation 2.2 has been
significantly overhauled relative to earlier versions.
* Video driver performance with Panorama. Panorama has received
considerable improvement since eComStation 2.1; in particular,
widescreen displays should now be much better-supported.
* WiFi support has been updated with new versions of the XWLAN
widget and the WPA supplicant program.
* A Java-based RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) client has been added
to facilitate remote connections to Windows workstations and
servers.
Please refer to www.ecomstation.com/support/ecs22beta for more
information on this beta and guidelines to submit your reports.

Warpstock Europe 2013 website online...
Hello everybody,
The Warpstock Europe website is live on www.warpstock.eu. Warpstock Europe 2013 will be held in the StayOkay Youthhostel in Heemskerk the Netherlands from the 24th to the 26th of May. The first presentations list will go online this week in the presentation schedule. But the first 10 presentations are already confirmed. When visiting Warpstock Europe you will be fully up to date where the community is at and where eCS is going!
If you come please book your ticket in advanced via the Mensys website. Then we have a good estimate how many people are coming. Price 20 Euro's per day. There are rooms at the youth hostel but you need to book in advanced.
If you do not stay at the youth hostel but want to have lunch at the youth hostel buy a ticket via the Mensys with lunch. Mensys will (1 week before the event) pass the reservations along to the youth hostel. Please note this reservation is for the youth hostel to have an estimate how many people are coming!
When you arrive at the youth hostel you need to make the FINAL reservation and payment for lunch yourself! So this reservation via the Mensys website is not entitlement for lunch or a payment!
Regards,
Roderick Klein
