Weasel mail server is now freeware

eComStationNews.com - Wed, 20140917 - 04:24 -0600

The Weasel mail server, which was formerly shareware, is now re-released
as open-source freeware, governed by the GNU GPL licence. There is no
longer any distinction between registered and unregistered versions. You
can get version 2.0 from

www.pmoylan.org/pages/os2/Weasel.html
or
ftp://pmoylan.org/Weasel/

Source code and the IMAP extension are also available in that FTP directory.

Weasel is a mail server that can be configured as either a single-domain
server or a multidomain server. For more details, the manual is on-line
on the above web site. The Weasel program is a mature application, with
full support for the POP3 and SMTP protocols. The IMAP extension still
has some limitations.

Warpstock 2014 presentation announcment: Lars Erdmann

eComStationNews.com - Mon, 20140915 - 12:40 -0600

My apologies to any that already received this but apparently many did not and I don't know who did or did not.

Warpstock is pleased to announce a presentation by Lars Erdmann, who will discuss his work regarding the USB stack and his plans for updating the USB Mass Storage Device Driver. In addition, Lars makes the following offer:

Anyone having one or more USB storage devices that is/are incompatible with the current USB drivers should bring the device(s) to Warpstock to give (donate) to Lars, as he cannot buy every single storage device which does not work with USBMSD.ADD. He will then take it/them back to Germany for his use in testing and reworking USBMSD.ADD (please no other devices besides storage devices).

As multi-LUN support also needs to be added, these devices (USB attached card readers; devices which appear as "fake" CD-ROMs to allow autostart under Windows, etc.) are also of interest.

Warpstock is the annual conference for eComStation and OS/2 users. Warpstock 2014 will be held at the Drury Inn St. Louis Airport, in St. Louis, Missouri October 24 - 26, 2014. Warpstock 2014 promises to be a can't-miss event, as new developments in the community will be discussed, and practical tips and techniques for getting the most out of existing systems and new hardware will be on the agenda.

DFSee 12.1 released: EXFAT support, enhancements and fixes

eComStationNews.com - Thu, 20140911 - 13:34 -0600

DFSee version 12.1 has been released, with new functionality and several fixes.

It is a MINOR release, with support for the EXFAT filesystem as the
main added feature, and several other small enhancements and fixes.

EXFAT is a 32-bit FAT filesystem optimized for (very large) removable media
like SD-cards used with cameras. It has an additional allocation-bitmap that
avoids a lot of the normal overhead when writing contiguous files. It is
now supported by Windows, OS-X and Linux, and is the recommended filesystem
for SD-cards larger than 32Gb.

DFSee is a very powerful disk-utility with disk partitioning,
filesystem and disk analysis, some file recovery and UNDELETE
and smart imaging or cloning of partitions or complete disks.

bww bitwise works GmbH progress update

eComStationNews.com - Wed, 20140910 - 10:07 -0600

*bww bitwise works GmbH progress update September 10, 2014*

We are finally done with the long awaited git 2.0 software port. Unfortunately this port took us very long, as we had to do a lot updates on other ports, as well as some new ports. Git and all the needed requirements can be installed with "yum install git". If one doesn't like yum there is the possibility to download the zip package of git and install it from there.
If you are curious in what was added or changed for the git port, please have a look at Unix Ports <trac.netlabs.org/ports/timeline>

We are now switching to Firefox again and we hope to have a fresh beta out very soon.
If you are interested to see the progress on Firefox, please have a look at Firefox for eCS (OS/2) <https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2>

An overview of the functionality in the DFSee disk analysis and recovery tool DFSee, with emphasis on new features added since 2008 (version 9 through 12). After a brief presentation there will be enough time for questions and perhaps some demos on usage of DFSee.

2) Disk partition and file system basics, with DFSee demos and Q&A

A brief overview of disk partitioning, including OS/2 LVM and GPT style, and a summary of the on-disk structures of several file systems. Some hands-on using DFSee itself, driven by questions asked.

FtpServer 2.0 is open source

eComStationNews.com - Wed, 20140903 - 00:57 -0600

The FtpServer software, formerly distributed as shareware, is now
open-source and freeware, subject to the GPL open-source licence. The
binaries and the sources may be obtained from

www.pmoylan.org/pages/os2/FtpServer.html

or from Hobbes.

(Binaries in one zip file, sources in three other zip files.)

FtpServer is an FTP daemon for OS/2. Although an FTP daemon already
comes supplied with OS/2, this one has more flexible control over what
clients are allowed to do and see. Each user sees a virtual file system
(which can be different for each user) which, through the use of
symbolic links and visibility controls, hides the actual file system
from the user. It is also possible to control which IP addresses are
allowed to connect to the server.

The included tools include a Monitor program that lets the manager see
who is connected.

INIServe updated to version 2.4

eComStationNews.com - Sat, 20140830 - 05:19 -0600

The latest version of INIServe can be downloaded from

ftp://ftp.pmoylan.org/software/iniser2.4.zip

or from Hobbes. It is not significantly different from version 2.3, but
is now licensed under the GNU GPL licence.

INIServe is software for remote access to OS/2 INI files. It is a
recommended add-on for the programs Weasel, Major Major, and FtpServer,
but is potentially usable for any program that is running on a different
computer than the manager's computer.

GenINI version 1.6 released

eComStationNews.com - Fri, 20140829 - 01:12 -0600

The GenINI package has been updated to version 1.6. You can obtain it from

www.pmoylan.org/pages/os2/genini.html

or from Hobbes. There is no change in functionality from version 1.5.
The only reason for this release is to add a GNU GPL open-source licence.

GenINI consists of two programs, to convert between the INI and TNI file
formats. A TNI file is a human-readable version of an INI file. It can
be used for backing up INI files. It can also be used in conjunction
with the Weasel and Major Major mail programs.

Apache OpenOffice for eCS (OS/2) update

eComStationNews.com - Thu, 20140828 - 06:40 -0600

Apache OpenOffice for eCS (OS/2) update

We just uploaded an update to the recently announced Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 RC3.
This update enables the so called category B modules. The most known module of this category
is most likely the spellchecker. Where solver and scripting are others in this category.

Apache OpenOffice is the free and open productivity suite, consisting of
several mighty applications, such as Calc, Writer, Base, Impress and
several more. Apache OpenOffice is compatible to the leading commercial
productivity suite.

bww bitwise works is commited to provide the latest version available,
which will be version 4.1.1.

Download Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 RC3 update 1 at:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/350r8h2dpuxsg8w/AAAjVtD4f5_FaFghfUg_l6BYa/aoo
If you have issues please use the debug file to get more
debug output.

If you like Apache OpenOffice, please pass by our online shop at
www.bitwiseworks.com/shop and buy Apache OpenOffice for
eCS(OS/2). This donations save the ongoing development and bugfixing.

PMOS/2 updated

eComStationNews.com - Thu, 20140828 - 04:37 -0600

The PMOS/2 library of Modula-2 source code has been updated, and can be
fetched from

ftp://pmoylan.org/software/pmos2014.zip

It is mostly of interest to programmers who want source code snippets
for a variety of operations. The code should be easily readable by
anyone familiar with Pascal-like programming languages.

The main reason for this release is to convert the code licence to GPL.
In the not too distant future I intend to re-release several of my
programs as open-source, and those programs make extensive use of the
PMOS/2 code.

bww Newsletter

eComStationNews.com - Fri, 20140822 - 01:54 -0600

*bww bitwise works GmbH Newsletter August 22, 2014*

Hereby we would like to give you an update on current and possibly future projects and keep you informed about what we do for your sponsoring units!

Right now we work on various projects as you might have read or heard. Some people seem to think that all projects are done by the same people in parallel, which is not the case.
We have a very qualified team of developers working on the various projects, nevertheless our resources are limited and therefore we have to put projects temporarily on hold and resume later, as we never over schedule our resources. Thereby we are very capable of running multiple projects in parallel.
We can assure you we do not announce or promise more than we can manage at a given time!

bww bitwise works GmbH has been in touch for some time with Lewis Rosenthal, who has recently announced the new OS/2-focused company, Arca Noae LLC. He has launched Arca Noae mainly due to a lack of updated offerings for the OS/2 community. We continue to work closely with Arca Noae to map out the schedule for the release of new and updated items. Both companies will also sell each other's products.

As mentioned in Lewis' recent public postings to the community, the Arca Noae team is working on the final bits and pieces in order to get their new website live and open their shop for business.

*Current projects:*
- Firefox 24
We know that a later one is out for a while, but we stick at this version until it's GA for us as this means a new base version from which the newer releases are easier to be build. At the moment it is depending on underlying tooling to be finished first as in: git (versioning application used for github as example), which is 98% done now.
- SWT (Standard Widget Toolkit)
This will also include odin updates. SWT will bring eclipse and current SmartSVN/SmartGit tools.
- Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1
RC3 was announced recently, see also: www.bitwiseworks.com
- Injoy Firewall
Version 4.2.2 is available since some weeks already, see also: www.bitwiseworks.com

*Future projects:*
- update Java to latest OpenJDK, which brings new recent Java applications
- update Qt to Qt5, to have latest webkit working. With this we will get even more Qt applications

Please mail us at info@bitwiseworks.com if you have a need for other projects.

*Track record for this year:*
We also updated a whole bunch of other stuff, as we needed it for some projects we work on. Here is the list we did so far:
- curl
- python
- git
- mmap
- perl
- pthread
- openssl
- expat
- libtool
- autoconf
- automake

All the above ports are available as rpm and the source is at svn.netlabs.org

St. Veit an der Glan, Austria, August 18, 2014 --- After a long period of

OS/2 GURU Jam Session RESULTS [2/3]

eComStationNews.com - Wed, 20140813 - 18:23 -0600

The meeting was succesful because the participants offered additional
topics for discussion.

Check the results:
* Logs and topics: os2.guru/en/index.php
* Read the interview with Alex Taylor about eComStation internals --
ecomstation.ru/showarticle.php
(extended version)
* + interview with the designer Wizard (different eComStation artwork,
artwork for applications, promo materials)
(russian text) -- ru.ecomstation.ru/showarticle.php

Open topics for discussion:
* How to link OS/2 with mobile devices? What are your needs?
* How to use OS/2 for business purposes? Generate document, print and
manage finances?

Mistakes of OS/2 GURU 2014/07:
* There were no promotion of OS/2 GURU on other OS/2 sites (no
banners, no discussions. os2world published the announcement on the
TOP)
* The program should be separated to: Common topics, for developers,
for businessmen
* To animate the meeting, it's necessary show video materials (online
translation or recorder interviews or reports)
