Poll: What is the height of RPM barrier?

eComStationNews.com - Mon, 01/30/2012 - 13:40

New poll on ecomstation.ru site:

What is the height of RPM barrier?

ecomstation.ru/poll.php

The goal of the poll - investigate the attitude of the users to RPM installer for eComStation.

(Don't forget input anti-spam 6-digits CODE: below the list of answers on the page of voting)

Large runtimes were packed to RPM format (Odin, Qt4 runtime).

The development of this runtimes/libraries required huge financial resources.

Some users report that it's not easy to install programs packed to RPM.

(the user must download RPM stuff, learn RPM, contact the maintainers of RPM

to complete the installation, os2world.com forum -- www.os2world.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,63/topic,3701.msg21709/topicseen,1/ )

As result less users can install new

versions of the runtimes. The resources were spent,

but not all users can test the results.

Previous versions of the runtimes were packed to WarpIn

and installation was easy and fast.

Seems that RPM is a barrier for the users.

Attention! We are going publish all comments (All emails will be hidden).

What is the height of RPM barrier?

* it's not a barrier

* 1 cm, 5 cm, I can jump over

* 1 meter, 2 meters, I can use a ladder

* 5 meters, I can't overcome the barrier, please pack to WarpIn format

SANE HPLIP - bounty request for support of HP scanners - 20% of goal reached

eComStationNews.com - Sat, 01/28/2012 - 19:30

Paul Smedley has had a number of requests for support for HP scanners, which actually have very good support under linux using the HPLIP driver.

In order for there to be a possibility of him solving the problems, he would need to purchase suitable hardware. Something like the HP Photosmart 7510 which is recommended for use with HPLIP. If you want to help support this project please use the link below. Paul estimates the cost at $A229 (approx $US250) and has collected $50US so far. See his HPLIP page for more information. -

If you'd like to help support continued development of this project (and many others) for OS/2 & eComStation, please consider making a donation either via Paypal using the link on Paul's website, or using the Mensys Online Store www.mensys.net/os2ports/

New USB host controller drivers: usbhcd179.zip

eComStationNews.com - Thu, 01/19/2012 - 02:01

I have updated the USB host controller drivers
USBUHCD.SYS,USBOHCD.SYS,USBEHCD.SYS
I have now placed these on hobbes.
They will eventually make it into directory:
/pub/os2/system/drivers/misc

I worked heavily on suspend/resume for all: UHCI/OHCI/EHCI.

For UHCI I found some very nasty bugs where I was reading from some bogus register address (an oversight from my part). That could have about any strange effect. For all those that have hard hangs (one person reported 4 UHCI controllers would work fine but the 5th would completely hang his system) just try out this version and see if it helps. Same holds true for EHCI where I forgot to properly initialize the retry loop counter on some register polling loops. Again, that could have any strange effect.

The included USBD.SYS is experimental. Give it a try anyway, in particular if you want suspend/resume to work smoothly. As always, back up the original IBM driver in case something goes wrong. Report results.

You CAN use the HC drivers with the USBD.SYS IBM version but better not mix different versions of the HC drivers.

Please try the drivers with and without the /FS flag and report results. If the /FS flag turns out to be the better choice I might consider making it the default and therefore to render the flag superfluous.

I would like to thank all those people who have reported bugs, in particular those people who where patient enough to wait for the solution. If I don't get many bug reports in the next couple of weeks, I will consider this version stable enough for eComStation to add to their installation CD-ROM update (together with the updated ACPI.PSD). Therefore the update rate will go down ...

TIMESET version 1.11 released on the BetaZone

eComStationNews.com - Sat, 01/14/2012 - 05:46

Version 1.11 of the eComStation Clock Synchronization Utility (TIMESET) is now available on the BetaZone for Software Subscription Services members.

Changes since version 1.10 include:
 - A bug fix in loading the language-specific timezone database.
 - The Product Information dialog shows some additional information.
 - The 'Synchronize Now' function now runs in a separate thread, and
 also uses whatever server and timezone settings are currently selected in the GUI (even if they have not been saved).
 - The program now checks TZ environment against CONFIG.SYS setting,  and warns if they are different. - The Japanese language file has been updated for the current version, with various improvements. (However, some messages remain in  English.)
 By default, TIMESET still uses Kai Uwe Rommel's DAYTIME client as a backend. The WPI on the BetaZone includes version 1.20, which contains both problem fixes and functional enhancements by Steven Levine, Robert Blair, and myself. NOTE: if you use the default backend configuration file (program.def) without modifications, you must use this version of

DAYTIME. If you have an older version of daytime.exe which you prefer

to continue using, you must edit program.def and (in the uncommented section for DAYTIME) delete the contents of the 'basic' parameter (or simply comment out the entire line).
 To enable the use of CLKMGR in place of DAYTIME, edit program.def
with your favourite text editor. Comment out (by adding a preceding
';' to each line) the entire section for using DAYTIME, and un-comment
the section for CLKMGR. The file should be readable enough for this
change to be pretty straightforward.
